Document Checklist for Proving Slovak Citizenship by Ancestry
If you have an ancestor who was a citizen of Czechoslovakia, you can obtain citizenship through a special procedure. For this, consider a few crucial points.
Required Documents for Filing an Application
When applying for Slovakia citizenship by ancestry, gather the applicant’s documents and materials that prove their ancestry. They will help establish eligibility for citizenship and confirm family ties.
The application package may include:
- application for citizenship;
- birth certificate;
- valid identification document;
- documents regarding marital status;
- certificate of no criminal record;
- structured biographical summary;
- proof of a Slovak ancestor.
Documents that link generations are particularly important. If the starting point is a great-grandfather, you must provide documentation showing the lineage: parent, grandfather or grandmother, and then great-grandfather. Birth and marriage certificates are used for this purpose. Marriage documents are especially important when surnames have changed. If modern records are unavailable, information is sought in archival materials.
Requirements for Foreign Documents
If documents are issued outside of Slovakia, check the requirements for certification and translation in advance. Depending on the country, an apostille or another form of legalization may be required. An official translation into Slovak is often required.
It is necessary that dates, first names, and last names match and allow for the identification of relatives and the establishment of generational relationships. If there are different spellings of a first name or last name, additional proof may be requested.
