Basic Eligibility Criteria for Obtaining Slovak Citizenship
Naturalization requires strict compliance with the country’s laws. The main requirements are length of residence, good conduct, language proficiency, and fulfillment of civic duties. The rules are the same for EU citizens and citizens of other countries. Preferential conditions apply to certain categories of applicants.
Legal Residence and No Barriers to Citizenship
How to get citizenship in Slovakia? The status is granted in accordance with specific legal requirements:
- Residence period - 8 years with permanent residence status (trvalý pobyt) prior to submitting the application, with possible exceptions for shortening this period.
- No criminal convictions for intentional crimes, taking into account the expiry of such convictions.
- No deportation orders, entry bans, or pending criminal or extradition proceedings.
Meeting these criteria helps applicants successfully pass the background check.
Knowledge of the Slovak Language and Compliance with Tax Obligations
Applicants must be fluent in spoken and written Slovak and have knowledge of the country’s history, geography, and political system. The exam consists of an oral interview, a reading comprehension section, and a writing assignment, taking into account the applicant’s age, health, and education. Individuals under 14 and over 65, as well as certain categories of citizens as defined by law, are exempt from the exam.
Before submitting the application, all financial obligations to the state must be fully settled. The timely payment of taxes, fees, and health and social insurance contributions is verified. Compliance with immigration laws and employment regulations is also taken into account. The absence of debts and strict financial discipline are mandatory conditions for the successful review of the application.
Exceptions to the General Residency Requirement
The law allows individuals to apply for a passport before the established eight-year period has elapsed. The expedited procedure is available to spouses of local citizens who are in a legally registered marriage and have maintained a joint household in the country for at least five years prior to submitting the application.
Preferential conditions also apply to natives of the republic, refugees, and minors who meet the regulatory requirements, as well as to stateless persons and individuals with historical roots in Slovakia. The existence of such grounds and the list of supporting documents are determined on a case-by-case basis.
