Standard Slovak Citizenship by Naturalization – Main Legal Requirements and Timeline
Continuous residence in the country for at least 8 years makes you eligible for citizenship. Learn about the main steps and requirements so you can prepare properly.
The Main Requirements
When granting Slovak citizenship, not only the length of residence but also additional requirements are taken into account. Among these, the following are verified:
- the applicant's good character;
- knowledge of the Slovak language;
- general knowledge of the country;
- compliance with laws regarding residency, taxes, and insurance;
- no criminal prosecution or deportation proceedings.
Knowledge of the language and basic information is tested during the procedure: reading a text in Slovak, summarizing its content, and answering questions about the country’s history, geography, and development. Exceptions apply to certain categories, such as individuals over the age of 65 or applicants with a Slovak education or background.
Application Submission and Deadlines
Applications must be submitted in person to a district office in Slovakia or to a diplomatic mission. They must be accompanied by a biography, an identity document, a birth certificate, documents regarding marital status, proof of residence, and certificates of no criminal record.
The Ministry of the Interior reviews the application within 24 months of receipt. This period may be suspended if opinions from other government agencies are required.
The standard procedure requires at least 8 years of continuous residence prior to filing the application. After that, the review process may take up to 2 years.
