How to Apply for a Work Visa in Slovakia - Documents and Timeline
For citizens of non-EU countries, employment requires obtaining a residence permit. A visa alone does not grant access to the labor market. The Single Permit is the most commonly used option. First Steps - Where to Start?
First and foremost, you must receive a job offer from an employer. For a standard Single Permit, the employer applies to the Labor Office and receives confirmation.
Main requirements:
- the vacancy must be posted at least 20 business days in advance;
- confirmation is issued after verifying the employer’s ability to hire a foreign worker;
- exceptions are provided for by law for certain categories
After receiving confirmation, the candidate applies for a temporary residence permit for the purpose of employment. The permit is tied to a specific employer, position, and place of work. Any changes to these conditions require approval from the Labor Office.
What Documents Will Be Needed?
To apply for temporary residence for employment purposes, you must submit an official form and supporting documents. The main documents include a foreign passport, a criminal record check, and proof of housing. Depending on the situation, you may also need to confirm with the Labor Office, obtain a work permit, or a document from your employer stating that a work permit is not required.
The criminal record check must meet the requirements and is generally valid for no more than 90 days. If the applicant has resided in another country for more than three months within the last three years, a certificate from that country is also required. Documents in a foreign language must be accompanied by a certified translation into Slovak.
Proof of residence is mandatory. This can be a lease agreement, a document from a hotel, or a statement from the property owner. There are time-limit restrictions on the validity of such documents.
