Key Requirements and Conditions for Obtaining Slovak Citizenship
Getting Slovak citizenship is possible after a long period of residence and integration. The main route is naturalization. The applicant must meet the residency requirement, be proficient in the language, comply with the laws, and confirm that there are no obstacles to citizenship. The Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic makes the decision.
What You Need to Become a Citizen
To obtain Slovak citizenship, a foreign national is generally required to have resided in the country continuously for eight years. The law provides for exceptions for spouses of Slovak citizens, individuals born in Slovakia, minors, refugees, former citizens, and holders of “Slovak Living Abroad” status.
The main steps:
- verification of the length of residence;
- demonstration of language proficiency and basic knowledge of the country;
- background check and verification of no criminal record;
- compliance with tax, insurance, and residency regulations.
The applicant undergoes an assessment of language proficiency and knowledge of Slovakia. Exceptions apply to children under 14 and certain categories of applicants.
Filing an Application and Review of the Case
Applications for citizenship are submitted in person to a district office in Slovakia or to a consulate abroad. Typically, the following documents are required: an application form, a curriculum vitae, an identity document, a birth certificate, documents regarding marital status, proof of residence, and a certificate of no criminal record. In some cases, documents regarding taxes, insurance, and other obligations may also be required.
After the documents are accepted, the case is forwarded to the Ministry of the Interior. The processing time is up to 24 months, but may be suspended if additional materials are requested. Even if all conditions are met, citizenship is not granted automatically. The Ministry takes into account the interests of the state, security, and public order. Citizenship is considered granted after a certificate is issued and, if required, an oath is taken.
