To live in Slovakia for more than 90 days, choose the appropriate residence permit in Slovakia. The law provides for several grounds: employment, business, study, family, research, and special categories. Prepare by familiarizing yourself with the basic information below.

From Choosing a Basis to Receiving a Residence Permit

For non-EU citizens, moving begins with choosing a basis for living. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you’ll need a temporary or permanent residence permit.

Here is the application process:

  • determine the category (work, business, study, family, research);
  • check where to submit your application - at the consulate or at the Foreigners’ Police Office;
  • gather the required documents: passport, application form, proof of purpose, criminal record check, proof of housing, and any additional documents for business or study;
  • check the validity periods of the documents - most must not be older than 90 days;
  • if necessary, obtain an apostille or consular legalization and have the documents translated into Slovak;
  • submit the application in person, attend an interview, and wait for a decision.

On average, it takes 90 days. For certain categories, it is faster. After receiving your documents, you must enter the country within 180 days, register with the police within three business days, obtain insurance, and provide a medical certificate.

The long-term options include 5-year permanent stays, indefinite stays, and long-term stays. These statuses are considered separately and do not automatically extend the validity of a limited-stay permit.
