Anyone can start a business, regardless of citizenship in Slovakia. However, there is one important requirement for foreigners, as they must first obtain a residence permit. This permit grants them the right to conduct business and grow professionally.

How to Start a Company?

Company registration in Slovakia is possible for foreigners, and they most often choose the S.R.O. form - a limited liability company. This is a convenient option for small and medium-sized businesses, as well as for IT projects and startups. Its popularity stems from its ease of management and the fact that shareholders are liable only to the extent of their contributions. Joint-stock companies are established less frequently, mainly for large-scale projects with many investors.

Here’s what you need to prepare:

  1. The company name is verified and reserved with the Commercial Register.
  2. The articles of incorporation are prepared and set forth the company’s operating rules.
  3. A registered address is selected within the country.
  4. Capital is deposited into the company’s account.
  5. Documents are submitted to the Commercial Register.
  6. Identification numbers (IČO and DIČ) are issued after registration.

If everything is done correctly, a company can be registered in one or two weeks. To do so, you will need the articles of incorporation, proof of a legal address, a certificate of no criminal record, and a residence permit card.

What Are the Restrictions?

You can conduct business in Slovakia either as an individual or through a company, provided you have the appropriate residence permit. Only this permit grants you the right to engage in business activities.

Furthermore, not every residency status allows for this. For example, tolerated stay, temporary status, or asylum-seeker status do not permit you to register a business.
